Gattaca

Arguably the greatest sci-fi film of all time. “Gattaca” (1997) tells a classic tale of man playing god and the unexpected consequences that arise when science is sought to manipulate and perfect the natural order of things.
Gattaca, written and directed by Andrew Niccol, stars Ethan Hawke as the genetically “inferior” Vincent Morrow; Uma Thurman as the infallible symbol of Gattaca perfection – Irene, and Jude Law as the damaged Eugene – aptly named as it’s original Greek translates to “well born”. Backed by a stellar supporting cast – screen giant Ernest Borgnine, Alan Arkin, Gore Vidal, and Elias Koteas.
Much has been made of the classic aesthetic of the film, from its set and costume design to its beautiful imagery – shot by principal cinematographer, Slawomir Idziak, known for “Black Hawk Down”, and “Three Colors: Blue”. Here are two intriguing reads; an essay by Daniel Tu on the “Language of Color in Gattaca” – https://bit.ly/2OYNFv9 , and an article by Christopher Tuazon, “Gattaca: an Achievement in Classic Style” – https://bit.ly/2IjGagZ
And why the title – “Gattaca?” The name is based on DNA sequences “GATA” and “CA”, the specific letters of which are the four nitrogen bases of DNA – guanine, adenine, thymine and cytosine. “There is no gene for the human spirit” – tagline for the movie.
